New Project

At the beginning of this week Dr. Combs told me that I should be expecting a phone call later on this week from a woman by the name of Julie Donnelly. Ms. Donnelly works for a company by the name of Julstro Muscular Therapy. The company has a book titled Treat Yourself to Pain Free Living, which instructs people on how to help them cope with and get rid of pain such as eye, jaw, calf, hamstring, and back pain, along with many other areas of the body. On Wednesday Ms. Donnelly contacted me and we set up an appointment on Thursday afternoon to shoot video of the different exercises in the book Treat Yourself to Pain Free Living. Ms. Donnelly was hoping to make about a 15-45sec video clip of the different exercises and put them on the company’s website for customers to purchase for a few dollars. This would be more beneficial for customers that wanted to help fix a specific painful area on their body rather than purchasing the entire book. My task for next week is to clean up the videotaping I did and send it back to Ms. Donnelly and have her email me back on which exercises came out ok and which ones we need to re-videotape.

Soccer Players using FMS

In the middle of week I had a few appointments set up with some additional soccer players to video tape them performing the functional movement screen exercises. Out of the 3 players they scored a 16, 16, and 17. As many of the other fellow teammates I videotaped they had imbalances and asymmetries. My plan is to give them the corrective exercise booklet I made and have them work on them over the summer and when I come back next fall videotape them again and see if there are any improvements.

More Filming

This past weekend I videotaped another soccer player on the team doing the seven functional movement screen exercises. This time the player scored a 17 as another player had and I noticed very similar asymmetries and imbalances. At the end of him performing the exercises and looking at the notes I made I gave him a print out of the corrective exercises I felt would help him fix his imbalances and asymmetries. At the end of the semester I will look to videotape him again doing the seven exercises to see if there were any improvements in his imbalances and asymmetries.

Corrective Exercise Booklet complete

After filming me performing the corrective exercises, I loaded them up to the computer and created two different still shots of me. One was the start position of the exercise and the other was the finishing position. I created each corrective exercise on a separate paper in a word document and gave a short detail of how to exactly perform the exercise, for how long to hold the position, and how many times to do it. After printing out all corrective exercises I three hole punched them all and put them in a binder to be able to hand them out to our clients.

Filming of Corrective Exercises

At the start of this week Dr. Combs had done some functional movement screening over the weekend and had me look over the results. Dr. Combs had made some side notes while he was scoring the two clients and from the side notes he had me come up with a list of corrective exercises for the two clients. In the end I came up with a list of about 8 different corrective exercises and my next task was to film me performing the exercises and make still shots of them to make a corrective exercise book lit to give to clients. I filmed me performing all the corrective exercise in the book incase a future client needed different corrective exercises other than the ones the current clients needed to work on.

FMS with MU Mens Soccer Continued

Over the weekend I conducted two more Functional Movement Screening videos of my fellow teammates and roommates. While videotaping them perform the 7 exercises I was able to notice imbalances in both of them along with a few asymmetries. However, in the end their scores were not all that bad. One of my roommates ended up scoring a 17 while the other got a 16. My next step is to have them work on the corrective exercises that will help them fix their imbalances and asymmetries. Looking forward to my next blog about me videotaping and making still shots of the corrective exercises for me to give to my clients as a handout!

More FMS with MU Mens Soccer

This past week during my internship I spent part of my time uploading the video I had taken of some fellow soccer players performing the 7 exercises and teaching a new fellow intern on how to use dartfish. For one day I sat and taught my new intern Kurt Kelly some of the basics on how use dartfish and all its features. I also explained to him the purpose of this internship and where Dr. Combs wanted us to take it. For the rest of the week I worked on using dartifsh analyzer to break down the film of the soccer players performing the 7 exercises so I could give them the proper evaluation. During my analysis of the players performing the tasks I noticed many had asymmetry and lack of mobility in their hips and knees. The highest of the scores that any of the players received was 17 out of 21. My next task or duty to do is film the corrective exercises for the players to do so they can fix their asymmetries and imbalances in their bodies. The purpose of doing this is to hopefully prevent any future injuries and once they are re-evaluated after a few weeks score higher on the test. Look forward to hearing about my results after re-evaluating the players! Kurt and I are hoping to get some of the baseball players involved in this since he is part of the team and will help spread the word around campus.

Soccer Team Using FMS

Over the weekend three other soccer players and I got together and were videotaped performing the 7 exercises. After doing the 7 exercises myself and watching my fellow teammates perform the exercises I could notice right away some imbalances in everyone including myself. Knowing this would be very beneficial to all of us because it would help us improve as athletes. This knowledge could possibly help prevent any future injuries. During the week I uploaded the video and began to analyze the four of us to see what imbalances and asymmetry were noticeable and needed corrections. Right away I could notice that the majority of us had asymmetry on our left sides because we were all right sided dominant. We all seemed to lack flexibility and motion in our left hips and knees. My next assignment was to shoot a video of me performing all the corrective exercises to fix these problems. So look forward to my next blog about that!

My First Project

At the start of this week Dr. Combs presented me with my very first assignment, which was to analyze one of his clients. Dr. Combs videotaped the gentleman using “FMS”. I had no idea as to what “FMS” was so Dr. Combs gave me a link to read up on exactly what “FMS” is and the reasoning behind it. “FMS” has a person perform 7 exercises: Deep Squat, Hurdle Step, In-Line Lung, Shoulder Mobility, Straight Leg Raise, trunk Stability Push-Up, and Rotational Stability. Later on in the week after reading up on “FMS” I began to analyze the video that Dr. Combs had taken of this particular client. The purpose of analyzing the video is to evaluate the person performing the 7 exercises and scoring them on how well they perform those specific tasks. The exercises point out any imbalances in the body whether that is functional limitations and/or asymmetries. After going through and doing my first evaluation I knew that it was not an easy task because I had to constantly go back and watch the exercises over and over in order to give a fair and accurate score. I soon realized that with practice and analyzing more film that I would become better at it. For the next week Dr. Combs wanted me to take my own video of student athletes performing the 7 exercises.

First Week On The Job

After my first week of meeting with Dr. Combs and discussing what my Internship this spring semester would entail, I found out that I would be using a Software program called “Dart fish” which is a video software analysis program. Throughout the semester I would be videotaping fellow soccer players and other clients of Dr. Combs using what is called Functional Movement Screening (FMS). Functional Movement Screen was originally developed to gather objective data for statistical analysis of human movement patterns with respect to functional performance and injury prevention. Throughout the week Dr. Combs walked me through on how to use “Dart Fish” and all of its features. After having a brief walk through I knew I had a lot to learn in the near future in order to use “Dart Fish” properly, so Dr. Combs gave me a manual to read over the weekend to catch up and learn all there is to know about the program.
